Waaihoek is a residential area established in 1846 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Bloemfontein experienced a population boom between 1890 and 1904, from the 1900 onwards, Waaihoek grew three times more than its size and led to overcrowding. A commission was established and it recommended to the city that the land be expropriated and residents moved out. Waaihoek was then demolished. This proposal questions and explores the idea of shared use of common space by diverse individuals. The organisation structure of the spaces is inspired by the theory of cosmopolitanism which focuses on the theme of “shared morality”.
