In this project we took it upon ourselves to activate and protect the street life. We created robust planter boxes, growing out of the pavement along Station Road in Braamfontein. These structures provided a shaded space for a moments rest in an otherwise harsh streets cape. By protecting existing and reproducing new vegetation along the road, the planter boxes act in acknowledging the human scale of the busy street, softening the pedestrian experience. This was an alternate view of the pavement place, where private entities took on the civic responsibilities to provide for their surrounding public.” There are some drawings on the planter boxes, the images of the completed boxes and the proposal to rent out ad space on the building to pay for the maintenance of the planted streets cape.
